Mahendra Shevte, a resident of Khadki who worked as a helper at the state-run Sassoon hospital, was placed under arrest around the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Hours later, Mois Ahmed Shaikh, a prison guard from Yerawada Central Prison, was placed under arrest.
The police said that Mahendra Shevte had a role to play in Lalit Patil’s escape from Sassoon General Hospital on October 2 and he is also suspected to have helped him during his hospital stay.
An investigation committee had been appointed under Dr Dileep Mhaisekar, Director of Medical Education and Research, to probe the alleged complacency of the administration in the entire episode.
