Lakeview building referendum passes | News, Sports, Jobs

Reporter COTTONWOOD  Voters in the Lakeview School District passed both questions of a total $10.8 million building bond referendum on Tuesday, according to unofficial vote results. “We’re really thankful for the community’s support,” said Lakeview Superintendent Chris Fenske. More than 500 people cast votes on the referendum, which will replace part of the school’s roof and HVAC system, along with updating parts of the school’s athletic fields. “We’re happy with the turnout,” Fenske said. The two parts of the referendum focused on the 2002 part of the Lakeview School building and on the school athletic fields, respectively. Question 1 of the referendum passed with 436 “yes” votes and 133 “no” votes, Fenske said. Question 1 would replace the roof and rooftop HVAC units, resurface the school parking lot, replace the kitchen freezer and cooler and do other building updates for a cost of $7.865 million.

Reporter Darrell Dirckx, head custodian at Lakeview Public Schools, explained some of the facilities needs that are included in a proposed bond referendum being considered by the district. A total of 35 rooftop HVAC units, like the one visible behind Dirckx, are original to the 2002 Lakeview school building, and need to be replaced. COTTONWOOD  It’s getting close to 20 years since the oldest part of Lakeview School was built, and there’s parts of the building that need to be replaced due to age and wear. The school district will be voting on a two-part, total $10.8 million facilities bond referendum that would fund the projects  but the process of getting the word out to the voters will be a little different, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
