After stalling on Wednesday, House lawmakers yesterday voted 63-28 in favor of House Bill 702. Introduced by Rep. Mary DuBuisson (R-Slidell), the legislation would place a ballot referendum question before local residents during the next election. It would ask if they think the prohibition on commercial gaming in the parish should be lifted.

NEW ORLEANS Louisiana lawmakers want to know where St. Tammany Parish residents stand on the notion of bringing a riverboat casino to the Northshore.
The Louisiana Senate Committee on Finance is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. Monday to discuss Senate Bill 213 before it s presented to Gov. John Bel Edwards for signing.
The bill calls for a referendum among St. Tammany Parish voters for a stance of bringing a casino to the parish. Planned for the Oct. 9 election, the referendum could be pushed back.
A share no larger than 5 percent of the casino s net gaming revenue would go to the parish in addition to economic support for drainage and recreation projects.

Regular session will host big bets

The fate of one of the state’s 15 casino licenses and the structure of sports betting in Louisiana will both be on the proverbial agenda for the regular session that convenes April 12. And while gaming advocates, lobbyists and attorneys are working overtime to carve out compromises now, the two issues could become among the hottest debated by lawmakers this year.
The matter of what to do with the license of the Bossier-based Diamond Jacks Casino was last discussed by the Legislature in 2018, when a plan to relocate the operation to Tangipahoa failed to gain traction. Now parent company Peninsula Pacific Entertainment is putting its force behind another effort to move the license to eastern St. Tammany Parish, in the Slidell area.
