The team is often called upon to assist with search and recovery operations in other counties in west central Minnesota as well. In many of these calls, the exact location of the drowning victim or evidence item is unknown and team members must conduct detailed searches. In January, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office purchased a Deep Trekker DTG 3 underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Our Dive Rescue Team will use this underwater vehicle to help with search operations for drowning victims and evidence.

Osakis Lake Association seeks board members, volunteers

(Osakis Review file photo) The Osakis Lakes Association put out a plea on social media recently, looking for members to join its board. “We are facing some major challenges moving forward,” its post said, citing the loss of retiring board members and the need for tens of thousands of dollars to fight invasive species. Their plea underscores the difficulties lake associations can face in tackling issues of invasives and pollutants. Lake associations say that lakeshore owners don’t always realize or want the responsibilities that come with living on the lake. Sometimes the lakeshore owners live in other cities or states and when they visit their weekend cabins, they want to relax.

Walz announces broadband grants for 39 projects

Elena Yur evna Gorina/Getty Images UP TO SPEED: Rural broadband projects in Minnesota are set to meet the state’s goals for minimum upload and download internet speeds. More than $20 million has been awarded to provide high-speed access to communities in greater Minnesota. Feb 11, 2021 Gov. Tim Walz announced that the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development will award grants totaling $20,645,425 to 39 projects under the state’s Border-to-Border Broadband Development Grant program. State grant dollars are matched by $33,695,279 in local funds, for a total investment in broadband infrastructure. The projects will bring broadband access to 6,922 businesses, homes and community institutions. This is the sixth year for the program.

Outdoornews January 7, 2021 District 1 – Baudette area CO Ben Huener (Roseau) checked coyote hunters and anglers around Roseau County. Anglers were checked on Lake of the Woods. Violations encountered included angling without a license and angling with extra lines. CO Aaron Larson (Baudette) worked angling, ATVing, snowmobiling, and trapping enforcement. Larson attended fisher/marten registration in Baudette and spent time checking anglers on Lake of the Woods and Upper Red Lake.  CO Corey Sura (Baudette) reports participating in snowmobile safety and operations training, checking furs and trappers at the recent furbearer registration, patrolling the area for trapping activity, and checking anglers on the Rainy River and Upper Red Lake. CO Sura wants to remind folks to make sure they have current registration on their ATVs and snowmobiles before hitting the lakes and trails, and that all non-portable fish houses and shelters require licenses.
