Researchers study antidepressants and plastics in NW Ontario lakes (3 Photos)

The COVID-19 pandemic postponed this research last year. This summer, armed with more knowledge about how to work safely, a team will return to the field to take on both projects. The ELA – a group of 58 lakes and watersheds east of Kenora – has been described as the world s largest freshwater laboratory. It s managed by the Winnipeg-based International Institute for Sustainable Development. Lakehead University is one of the partners working with the IISD-ELA to investigate what happens to fish and other aquatic organisms when microplastics enter the water.   IISD-ELA Deputy Director Pauline Gerrard says We know the plastics are there. We know they re everywhere. Microplastics are moving around through wind currents and watersheds, and ending up even in very remote areas.

Feds Invest In ELA Development

A one-of-a-kind area here in northwestern Ontario is getting a big boost from the Federal Government. The Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, more commonly known as FedNor, is investing almost $200 thousand into the International Institute for Sustainable Development Experimental Lakes Area (ELA). Matt McCandless is the senior director of the ELA and tells us that the money will go towards the Canada Centre for Climate and Lake Learning. “This investment of $180 thousand from FedNor is critical to bring the project to its next stage,” says McCandless, “Specifically, the funding will be used to hire architects and engineers to prepare blueprints, cost estimates and work plans so that project will be shovel-ready very soon.”
