On 16 December at 4.08 pm UTC, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake occurred at the shallow depth of 13.7 km, near Moro, Lake Kutubu Rural LLG, Nipa-Kutubu District, Southern Highlands, about 61 km west-southwest of Mendi, according to the US Geological Survey.
The intensity at the epicenter of the quake indicates strong shaking with light damage expected. Structures made of light construction materials will be more vulnerable to damages.
The population near the epicenter of the quake is approximately 16,000 people, based on 2011 census records. In Mendi, light shaking was felt, but preliminary reports indicate no immediate or obvious impacts. The further assessment is being conducted.[.]
