In Foxton Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom opened in 2017 in a former Mitre10 barn. In both languages it means ‘’the new stream’’. It’s in the shadow of a windmill, beside a flax museum, marking that it’s 150 years since this was the centre of a harakeke boom.
In this week’s art journey, Mark Amery takes us on a drive from Foxton, to Palmerston North and on to Masterton. The things that dominate can also be those most taken for granted. The lower North Island is dominated by both the Tararua mountain range and large tracts of farmland. I took a summer Te Hīkoi Toi around the Tararua, from the Horowhenua to the Wairarapa.

Swimmers could be putting themselves at risk of bacterial infections at more than a third of the wider Manawatū’s waterways this summer. From November to the end of April the Horizons Regional Council tests 70 lakes and rivers, and 11 coastal beaches in the Manawatū-Whanganui region for E.Coli, Cyanobacteria and Enterococci as part of its annual monitoring programme. Of the freshwater swim spots the council identified, 14 are at risk, are positive or don t have data for E.Coli, and 28 are at risk, are positive or don t have data for Cyanobacteria, according to its Safe Swim Spots table.
A programme designed to unclog waterways in the Manawatū Whanganui region has set its sights on freeing up more than 1000km of habitat for migratory fish.

The Enhancing Native Fish Populations through Fish Passage Remediation project was recently awarded $2.6 million through the government s Jobs for Nature programme.
The Horizons Regional Council has since committed a further $300,000 towards the $3.2m project that will build on existing programme, and will include removing large barriers to the movement of migratory fish.
