It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life.
Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday.
Alâs daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Alâs hospitalization.
Noe, 66, is no stranger to helping elderly shut-ins weather isolation.

LAKE COUNTY, IL The Lake County Board voted unanimously Tuesday to begin formulating zoning regulations for cannabis businesses, county officials announced. The vote came days before the expiration of a one-year moratorium on the consideration of recreational marijuana ventures in unincorporated portions of the county.
The next step is consideration of a set of draft zoning regulations during a public hearing by the Lake County Zoning Board of Appeals. County officials pledged to announce a date for a public hearing and provide other opportunities for input from the public within weeks.

WAUKEGAN, IL Just over a year after the legalization of recreational marijuana in Illinois, the Lake County Board directed its staff to begin a public hearing process that could allow adult-use cannabis businesses to open up shop in unincorporated parts of the county.
In late 2019, after extensive debate, board members agreed to a one-year moratorium on recreational cannabis. That moratorium is due to expire Feb. 10.
Local, regional and state organizations are nearly finished with the first phase of a conservation plan along the Arkansas River meant to promote public access and preserve land in southern Lake County.
Through a decade of collaborative effort, Lake County Government, Lake County Open Space Initiative (LCOSI), Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and the Central Colorado Conservancy (CCC) have worked to identify, purchase and protect acres of land along the Arkansas River in Lake County.
The project began in 2010 when LCOSI partnered with a consulting firm to identify land that could be acquired for conservation projects, Mike Conlin, facilitator with LCOSI, said.
