SEATTLE MacKenzie Scott, philanthropist, author and former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, says she has given away $4.1 billion in the past four months to hundreds of organizations as part of a giving pledge she announced last year.
She has donated $1.5 million to Meals on Wheels, as well as donations to Lake Area Tech & Mitchell Tech.
Scott announced her pandemic-era philanthropy in a Medium post Tuesday, writing that the pandemic has substantially increased the wealth of billionaires. Scott says she asked a team of advisers to help her “accelerate” her 2020 giving with immediate help to those financially gutted by the pandemic.
South Dakotaâs nationally recognized colleges Lake Area Technical College of Watertown and Mitchell Technical College of Mitchell say they are honored to be the recipients of significant impact gifts from philanthropist and popular novelist, MacKenzie Scott. Â
The announcement, made through social media, states that 384 organizations including Lake Area Technical College and Mitchell Technical College received generous donations to assist in continuing the good work they are already doing. The colleges will be using the donation to support transformative initiatives that will remove barriers for students and allow them the success everyone deserves.
MacKenzie Scott focused her giving on immediate support to people suffering the economic effects of the pandemic crisis but also seeks out organizations for their leadershipâs track record of effective management and significant impact in their fields. Lake Area Technical College President Mike Cartneyâ¦.
