Between 1972 and 1978, it is estimated up to 300 young people went through the Child and Adolescent Unit at Lake Alice. Inquiry lawyer Andrew Molloy said the figure could be at least 100 higher because records have never been found. Children were subjected to abuse, including sexual abuse while at the unit. Some staff were among the perpetrators, sometimes the children fell victims to older and bigger children, and sometimes to adults housed at the main Lake Alice Hospital.

1019 According to Wikipedia, Lake Alice Hospital was a rural psychiatric facility in Lake Alice, Manawatū-Whanganui, New Zealand.  It opened in August, 1950, and closed its doors finally in October 1999. Also from Wikipedia: “Former patients of the hospital’s child and adolescent unit made allegations that abuse took place there during the 1970s, including the use of electroconvulsive therapy and paraldehyde injections as punishment. [4] The New Zealand government issued a written apology in 2001, and has paid out a total of NZ$10.7 million in compensation to 183 former patients.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Investigation reveals at least 100 previously unknown Lake Alice patients

Former patients have been in contact with the Abuse in Care Royal Commission, prompting it to revise the number who had been in the unit between 1972 and when it closed in 1978. Although no official records were kept it was thought the number was around 200 young people, but now the number is believed closer to 300. Lead Investigation counsel Andrew Molloy said the new figure has come from a raft of new and valuable information his team has obtained through interviews with former patients, psychiatrists, psychologists, teachers and social workers - many of whom have never been interviewed before.
