Protesters hit the Tinsukia road, vowing not to quit till their demands are met

For more than a month now, nearly all residents of two Upper Assam villages - Laika and Dodhia - comprising around 3,000 people have been camping in the state s Tinsukia town, next to the deputy collector s office.
Protesting under the banner of Laika-Dodhia Rehabilitation Committee, the villagers staged a demonstration in front of Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner s office on Thursday, seeking rehabilitation because they say their settlements have not seen any development as they fall inside the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park.

The death of 24-year-old Kusmita Morang on Friday has only steeled the resolve of villagers from Laika in Tinsukia district of Assam and Dodhia in adjoining Dibrugarh district who are protesting and living in makeshift camps near the Tinsukia deputy commissioner’s office since December 22 last year seeking permanent rehabilitation.
Kusmita, one of the protesters, who suffered a miscarriage on Wednesday, passed away on Friday.
Two protesters have died so far while another was shifted to Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital on Friday. There are 14 others, including children, who are unwell, said a representative
About 2,500 people from two forest villages in upper Assam will be spending their New Year in makeshift camps near the Tinsukia DC’s office seeking permanent and proper rehabilitation.
Men, women and children are from Laika village in Tinsukia district and Dodhia village in Dibrugarh district, about 6km apart, have been living in these tarpaulin camps at Lezaihola Borguri near Tinsukia DC office, about 22km away from their homes, for the past ten days and have vowed to continue living and protesting this way till they are rehabilitated.

This has been their stand a day after chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal met representatives of the villagers falling under the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (DSNP) and directing the state forest department to “permanently rehabilitate” the affected families by January 31.

Tinsukia: The inhabitants of Laika and Dodhia villages in Tinsukia district have set up relief camps close to the Tinsukia District Commissioner s Office to raise demands for their immediate rehabilitation by the authorities. The villagers who have been protesting since the last seven days recently set up their relief camps in Lezaihola Borguri situated close to the DC s office so as to protest and place their demands for proper living conditions, which as they say, the government has failed to provide.
