SobowaleThe curtain was drawn yesterday on the three-day activities in celebration of the 80th birthday of the man we call “ID Noble,” Professor Idowu Sobowale, easily the face of modern journalism in Nigeria. It was not so much of clapping, dancing, and rejoicing except predictably in the church, ShepherdHill, Baptist Academy premises, Obanikoro.
After the thanksgiving worship, Professor Sobowale donned his gab and nestled in his mien of seriousness that gives expression to the world in which he is in his elements, the academe. And there was a full house of academics, as well as media professionals at the events that mark the 80th birthday of a journalism giant.

A group, the Concerned Indigenes of Lagos State (CILS) yesterday rebuked a former Minister of Communications, Maj. Gen. Tajudeen Olarenwaju (rtd) over what its members described as “clannish remarks” on the current contest for the headship of the Lagos State University (LASU).
In a statement made available to journalists, the group led by Mr. Oluwole Fatai, argued that it was unbecoming of a supposed elder statesman to oppose an eminently qualified Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for reasons other than on the grounds of incompetence.
The group wondered why politics should be introduced into an institution of higher learning like LASU, urging that the best candidate should be given the job.

But for the possibility of some gullible members of the public being misled by his mischievous antics, there would have been no need to respond to a recent statement by General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (rtd) titled âNo to imposition of LASU VCâ. The statement is riddled with so much illogic and brazen falsehood that if he had been more reflective, Olanrewaju would have refrained from appending his signature to such a document. His undisguised aim is to portray one of the aspirants for the vacant position of vice-chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Bello, as unqualified for the position. Yet, he offers no iota of proof to disprove her academic credentials, administrative and managerial competence or her ethical integrity.
