created. it wasn t a surge but jobs were created. that was a little blip. the overall trend has been consistent towards job losses. is march the change month where we go from losses to job creation? you know, there is an awful lot riding politically on this number that comes out this morning. the administration wants to see a big job creation number. it wants to say that the turn has come, we re on the right path. the stimulus plan worked. they ll make a big deal out of this. the government always says it s a lagging indicator. sure. jobs, of a turn around. it is. that s a valid statement. has there been turn around in the recession? we don t know at this point. so far, there has been no real turn around in the jobs picture. we re still losing jobs, ok? keep coming back to this. are we now at the point of the turn? are we now about to see job creation pick up in the months to come, in the months before november which, of course, is the big election month.
employment rate should look a lot sunnier and weather should get the credit for that, too. there is one place where rain, snow, or shine help wanted signs are out big time. uncle sam is the biggest employer out there. since the president took office, we have lost nearly a million construction and manufacturing jobs and big drops in retail and transportation, too. but the federal government hiring. in the same time period 55,000 federal workers hired. many experts expect though that this may be the worst and that the economy may soon start stabilizing. but when the economy improves, the unemployment rate may go up too. that says jobs seekers start jumping back into the market. unemployment is what is called a lagging indicator. usually the last thing that recovers in a recovery. back to you, shannon. shannon: all right. thanks for always breaking it down for us. brenda buttner, thank you. : you can catch brenda every saturday
well, i think, at the moment, these numbers are a fairly good sign. i think the real political worry is not so much focused on this jobs report, which is backward looking, it s about what already happened, as about what we re seeing happening going forward. and this has been a really worrying week, because we ve seen some real danger signals from europe. this whole recession, the final crisis, were a reminder to us of how closely tied the u.s. now is to the world economy. and we re seeing real shakiness in europe. a lot of people are starting to talk really seriously about there being an asset bubble already. and you re seeing i interviewed one of the leading private equity guys on wall street this week, and he said, i am selling everything i can. i think that we are going another bear market. now, if you haven t felt the recovery happen yet, that s pretty terrifying if the money men are saying, actually, we re heading for another downturn. and i think that s becoming a possibility
think the house may be a lagging indicator. having said that, i do think the members of the house who were worried about intel leaks have a point. they should also be worried about what s happening with donald trump and mike flynn. but the intel leaks are very serious. i think it s worrisome that we could have a shadow government or deep state that selectively leaks information and tarks down people that it doesn t like. so i think whether it s chaffetz or whoever and the house, they should be focused on looking into trump and flynn, yes, but i m also worried about these leaks which i think are criminal. so let s look for our viewers. here is a look at what the oversight committee wants to investigate and don t want to investigate. they want to investigate the leaks, they want to investigate security protocols at mar-a-lago when the president talked in public at the country club last weekend about the north korean.
