Liberty opens its 2021 spring season in the brand-new Liberty Arena, hosting VCU on Friday at 10 a.m. The Lady Flames posted a 21-12 record during the 2019 season and made their first postseason appearance since 2012, advancing to the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC). VCU went 24-7 in 2019, including a perfect 14-0 in Atlantic 10 play. The Rams received an automatic berth to the 2019 NCAA Division I Women s Volleyball Championship before falling to Cincinnati in four sets in the first round.
2021 Spring Sports Admissions/Tickets Due to COVID-19 and state regulations, capacity at all Liberty Athletics events is under a limited capacity of 250 patrons or 30 percent capacity, whichever is less based on social distancing protocols, per Virginia Governor Ralph Northam s current Phase 3 guidelines. ASUN Freshman of the Week Bella Smuda
Liberty center Bella Smuda, who scored a career-high 13 points during Saturday s win over North Alabama, has been recognized as the ASUN Women s Basketball Freshman of the Week.
Smuda s first career ASUN weekly honor makes it three straight weeks a Lady Flame has garnered a conference award. Ashtyn Baker was named ASUN Player of the Week on Jan. 4 and Makaela Kestner was tabbed ASUN Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 11.
A native of Exton, Pa., Smuda was efficient and effective during Liberty s two home victories over North Alabama, totaling 19 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in 25 total minutes of playing time. For the weekend, Smuda helped Liberty dominate the interior. The Lady Flames topped the Lions in rebounds (90-65), points in the paint (82-38) and second-chance points (50-18).

Liberty University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams open ASUN Conference play on New Year’s Day and Jan. 2, respectively, at Lipscomb University which the Flames defeated in the past two ASUN Championship games and at home against the Lady Bison.
In the new COVID-19 schedule format, the Flames and Lady Flames will conclude their two-game series the very next day against the same teams at the same locations with the men playing Jan. 2 at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn., and the women hosting Lipscomb on Jan. 3 in the sparkling new Liberty Arena, adjacent to the Vines Center.

Grayson and his mother, Dawn, were able to cheer the Flames on together in person at Saturday’s Cure Bowl in Orlando, near their home in Casselberry, Fla..
Christmas continued into Saturday for Grayson Coleman, a 9-year-old cancer survivor with the heart of a champion. Grayson was in the stands to watch his favorite football team, the Liberty University Flames, upset No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina at the Cure Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
“He loves cheering for the Flames,” said his mom, former Lady Flames women’s basketball guard Dawn Coleman (’90). “He wants to go to Liberty, and that makes me happy.”
The Liberty women s lacrosse team has unveiled its spring 2021 non-conference slate, featuring games against six ranked opponents from last season. I can t express enough how grateful we are to get back out on the field this spring. It has been a long, challenging journey that our girls have grown through, said head coach Kelly Nangle. I am beyond proud of how they have responded through the summer and through this fall season. We are prepared to attack one of the strongest schedules we have ever had. We are excited to compete at the highest level and continue to get better!
