Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has apologised for the IRA’s assassination of Lord Mountbatten following the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh. Ms McDonald described the murder of Lord Mountbatten – who died along with two members of his family and a Co Fermanagh teenager – on a fishing boat in County Sligo, Ireland, in 1979 as “heartbreaking”. Her comments came a day after a funeral service was held for Philip, Lord Mountbatten’s nephew, at Windsor Castle on Saturday. DUP MP Gregory Campbell said his party noted âthe apologyâ over the killings in Mullaghmore. It would be incredible if anyone was praised for saying sorry in relation to the murder of two adults and two children, he said. Referring to Mr Adamsâs remarks about Lord Mountbattenâs death, Mr Campbell said: âHas the Sinn FÃ©in position now changed?â âAn apology is one thing, we now need to see condemnation and justice for all the murders that took place that day,â he added. Lord Louis Mountbatten was killed when an IRA bomb detonated aboard his boat off the coast of Co Sligo. Also killed was Mountbattenâs 14-year-old grandson, Nicholas Knatchbull; the boyâs grandmother, Lady Doreen Brabourne; and Paul Maxwell, a 15-year-old boat boy from Enniskillen.
