Emergency services were called to an explosion in the town centre near Ladies Walk. GNAAS were called at about 5pm to reports of a patient having sustained burns and arrived at 5.15pm. The explosion was believed to have be close to where the former Opera House is being demolished. The patient was treated and assessed at the scene and airlifted to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue said: Three fire engines attended an incident on Ladies Walk, Workington. The incident involved an acetylene explosion. Firefighters administered first aid to one casualty and were in attendance for about two hours.

A man was airlifted to hospital after a gas explosion in Workington town centre.
The incident, on Ladies Walk, involved acetylene gas, normally used in bottle form to cut steel during demolition work.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called to the scene and landed at the nearby Workington Cricket Club.
The casualty, believed to be a man, was airlifted to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment.

Allerdale Borough Council update: all you need to know

More than a year ago Allerdale Borough Council closed its offices to the public due to the pandemic, since then the customer service team have carried on delivering business as usual with most of the team working from home and a skeleton crew manning the offices.
Their team have answered more than 80,000 customer telephone enquiries and dealt with many more online enquiries.
With the relaxation of restrictions, the council is reopening its offices on an appointment-only basis to ensure the safety of customers and our staff. There will no longer be a walk-in service. Offices will open for face-to-face appointments from tomorrow.
