HIGHLIGHTS
Only 85 women are permanent commissioned officers in the Indian Army
No women are in the commanding major units of the Indian Army
In his Independence Day address from the Red Fort in 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that women officers recruited under the short service commission in the armed forces would have the option of taking up the permanent commission.
