This week, the White House released an outline of its American Families Plan, which is being touted as the second phase of the administration’s infrastructure proposal (dubbed the “American Jobs Plan”). The American Families Plan would invest $1.8 trillion in education (including training for teachers), federal nutrition programs, childcare, and extending tax credits. Like the infrastructure proposal, the American Families Plan is not a bill (yet), but will rather serve as a first step in what is sure to be a lengthy legislative process. Here are some of its highlights: Education. The administration proposes allotting $309 billion to fund free universal pre-school for three and four year olds, and two years of free community college.

City Hall photo Like most other facilities in the city of Boston, the Curley Community Center in South Boston – known to many as the L Street Bathhouse – closed its doors last March when Covid-19 reached the region. Unlike most other city facilities, it has not re-opened. City officials made the call to keep it closed and speed up an existing plan to renovate the 70-year-old beachfront center in a massive rehabilitation project that’s intended to make what many consider the “crown jewel” of the city’s community centers even more special.

But in California, while rates have also improved, hundreds of thousands of people are still without a job. It doesn’t help that the unemployment systems are also backed up and mired in scandal, mostly attributed to antiquated systems and untrained personnel. California’s “antiquated” unemployment system has paid out anywhere between $11 and $30 billion worth of benefits that involve fraud.
