trafficking victims she s represented. hi, jacob. this house is a handful of 1,100 trafficked migrant thai farm workers lived today. if you wanted to go home to they would, were you able to go home? i couldn t, because they took our passports. everybody s passport they took away? yes. reporter: they lived and worked in conditions like these in hawaii and washington state. they were even given $9 a day to live on. that stopped after a month. because it wasn t what they were promised. they arranged for a labor attorney to visit the farm and the traffickers found out. the supervisors actually came back with some security guard with guns. they had short guns and long guns. eventually the u.s. granted them tea visas, which were given to trafficking victims. they were able to bring their wife s and children over from they would. what does it make you feel like your parents have a tough time to give you your life in l.a. oh my gosh.
and years. we know that recommendations made by the government accountability office by the v.a. s own office of inspector general have not been followed, have not solved these problems. i understand what this labor attorney is saying, but at some point, carol, there has to be accountability. the fact of the matter is yes, now we are waiting for these investigations, but the people behind them should have been fired well, it s in my opinion they should have been fired a long, long time ago before anybody even did die. carol there s something in the law there s something like with federal employees, they can t be fired the way, you know, private employees can be fired, perhaps. the house has passed a bill making it easier to fire federal employees. it has to go to the senate. is that necessary, joe? no, that s really, you know, pablum to kind of quench some of the political outrage here. you know, most federal employees do have due process rights that before they can be te
the oig knows when they spoke to me the oig inspectors can ask anyone that does scheduling. reporter: they asked you. they didn t ask me. i told them. reporter: carol, the more we hear about what has gone on here in the phoenix v.a. and getting reports around the country, the worse this scandal becomes, we did ask the phoenix v.a. about the allegations made by their own doctor. they told us they couldn t talk about it based on the investigation currently under way. but, i mean, as you can see, just more and more detail. and now we re understanding that these are young soldiers who are coming out of service, coming here for help, and guess what? you ve just got to stand in line. it s it s shocking. drew, i want you to stay with us because i want to bring in joe kaplan to discuss more on this. he s a labor attorney. so good morning, joe. good morning, carol. thanks for joining me. the outrage over this story is leading many to ask why hasn t anyone been fired yet?
i think it is. i think when you look at college sports at this point and being that college sports is such a big business, it s time to pay players. how much do you pay these players, because on a pay scale, you know, some guys are going to perform way better than others and some guys are overrated so that s what you have to figure out. reporter: northwestern says it will appeal the ruling claiming the athletes are primarily students. the unisays, quote, unionization and collective bargaining are not the appropriate methods to address the concrete concerns raised by student athletes. one labor attorney says regardless of northwestern s appeal, college sports will change. this is one of those sort of lightning bolt type developments that shakes up the whole landscape potentially. it isn t a done deal right now, but it opens up all these issues and heightnence the focus on
hall today remains to be seen. yesterday, monday, was scheduled to be his first day back at work after his intensive two-week behavioral therapy. he did not appear to be here at city hall. we didn t follow him for 24 hours but the only place he appeared to be yesterday and was was downtown law office where he was involved in mediation with noted attorney gloria allred and her client, and so there is mediation going on. we knew there would be a great deal of activity behind the scenes here. the mayor has hired a well known labor attorney and he s known for not being public but working behind the scenes. so there have been rumors here at city hall that the mayor is involved in some kind of mediation trying to get out from under with both local, state,
