victim. now you have all of these shooting victims, all these injuries, all these stabbings and all of these people. do you really think they will be successful in trying to nail down these? analogy to these cases would be the prosecution of riot crimes like say the l.a. riots because what you have is you have a lot of different moving parts and from the time of arrest to the time of trial, there s so many things going on, police have a hard time organizing their investigation and then ultimately marshalling that evidence at the time of trial, whether it be witnesses, whether it be forensics, even the issue of gunshot residue, for example, the microscopic dust after you fire a gun that ends up on your hand, you have so many people moving around, the problem of transference, maybe if you sit in the same police car now you have different people with different kinds of dust on their hand. that little problem alone becomes magnitude into a huge one. a wild card and that is what, if any
shifting to six police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. critics including famed attorney allan dershowitz accused marilyn moseby. when i hear some in the crowd saying unless there s a conviction we re going to riot again. you can t have justice by crowd. look there s a serious problem here and there is a lot of police abuse in some cities. but you don t respond to that by scapegoating individual policemen and overcharging them to make the crowd go away. that s not justice. richard reardon was mayor of los angeles in the aftermath of the l.a. riots and he is my guest today. good to see you, mayor. so do you agree with alan dershowitz? oh absolutely. you have to wait to get the information because you never know the type of jury and in fact you never know really the
probable cause to believe a crime happened because it s not a crime. that s the problem. there is no crime. the way freddie gray was treated by those officers was hideous it was horrible. it s a lot like the way rodney king was treated. take the rodney king case quickly. tried in the supreme court acquitted the cops were when the cops were that beat up rodney king acquitted. federal court, two of of them convicted on civil rights violation. the riots happened after the acquittal. l.a. was destroyed. a 3 people killed. if the cops had been convicted of the civil rights case, then there would not have been the l.a. riots, i think. in this town, in this freddie gray case, i think the federal authorities should go first with the civil rights case infinitely easier to proof than the state charges. i don t think she should have overstepped her grounds and talking about the community at the end.
