OTTAWA Mayor Jim Watson opened the first meeting of Ottawa City Council in 2021 with his annual State of the City address. The speech focused greatly on the COVID-19 pandemic and how citizens and the municipal government managed throughout 2020. Here are seven highlights from the address.
2020 was a year like no other Watson said that there are many ways that citizens will look back on 2020, which was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic. While acknowledging the loss and hardship the pandemic wrought, the mayor focused on how people came together to support one another during a time of crisis. Watson highlighted how businesses adapted to the pandemic, many of which pivoted to creating products to fight the pandemic, such as face shields and hand sanitizer. He spoke of the efforts by front-line workers and volunteers to acquire personal protective equipment and of the generosity of citizens in donating to organizations like the Ottawa Food Bank.
