Not long after a celebrated pastor in Georgia became that state’s first Black U.S. senator, the Rev. Michael Evans laid his claim to one of North Texas’ racial firsts.
Evans, 54, the senior pastor at Tarrant County’s oldest Black church, became the first Black mayor in Mansfield’s 130-year history.
“I’m that guy from inner-city Houston, from humble beginnings,” Evans said on Jan. 11, just a few hours before ending a decade with the Tarrant County College Board of Trustees to be sworn in as mayor. “But if you have love and passion for a city, you get involved, influence the quality of life and work to help folks have a good place to raise their families.”
