Ukrainian forces are fighting to retain control of Soledar in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, the regional governor said on Saturday, contradicting Russian claims that Moscow's forces had captured the small town.
The town of Soledar in Donetsk region remains under the control of Ukrainian servicemen, but intense fighting is taking place in the city, said head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration Pavlo Kyrylenko.
Meanwhile, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of Wagner and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said his forces had captured all of Soledar and killed about 500 Ukrainian soldiers after heavy fighting. "I want to confirm the complete liberation and cleansing of the territory of Soledar," Prigozhin said in a statement.
