Permits were approved this week for a nearly 8,000-seat indoor arena to host concerts, San Diego Sockers games and other sports events at Oceanside’s sprawling El Corazon Park.
Negotiations with the park’s developer, Sudberry Properties, remain underway, and construction of the proposed Arena Califino depends on whether the Oceanside City Council can work out details such as property rights and revenue sharing.
“It’s a good outcome,” said Oceanside Planning Commission Chair Tom Rosales, after the commission approved a development plan and a conditional-use permit, and made some recommendations to staffers and the City Council. “I think this is going to be a good project for everybody.”

Oceanside city officials, facing criticism from residents, the League of Women Voters and the American Civil Liberties Union, have stepped back from a proposal to tighten regulations for the Brother Benno’s Foundation’s services to the homeless.
One of the changes is that the city will not pursue its request for Brother Benno’s to share information about its clients with the Oceanside Police Department, an idea some critics called “Orwellian.”
“Absent a court order or a warrant, we are not going to let anybody have access to our database,” said Marco Gonzalez, an attorney for Brother Benno’s.

The Oceanside City Council, on a 3-1 vote Wednesday, appointed real estate agent Kori Jensen to the District 1 seat left vacant Nov. 3 when longtime Councilwoman Esther Sanchez was elected mayor.
Jensen will be sworn in at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Oceanside city clerk’s office and will immediately start her term, which lasts through 2022. A ceremonial swearing-in will be held at the Feb. 3 council meeting.
Housing, public safety, solutions for the city’s homeless problem, and keeping sand on the city’s eroding beaches would be her top priorities as a council member, Jensen said in response to questions from council members Wednesday.
