A new bill before the Legislature is aiming to incentivize the protection of one of Nevada s most fragile and intangible resources: dark skies. Sponsored by Lt. Gov. Kate Marshall, SB 52 would create a state-level program to award “dark sky” designations to qualifying locations throughout Nevada.  “There are extraordinary dark sky assets across Nevada that are really important for ecological and environmental and astronomical reasons and that offer economic benefits for rural communities,” said Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Administrator Colin Robertson, who submitted the request for the bill. “Those gateway communities to Nevada’s most beloved outdoor areas overlap nicely with dark star places across the state. It was a natural fit to think about nighttime outdoor activities that compliment those that happen during the day, he said.
