GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday named defenseman
Brian Lashoff as the 17th captain in franchise history.
Lashoff, 30, begins his 12th season in a Griffins uniform, having made his debut as 18-year-old on March 29, 2009 at Philadelphia. One of three players to be a part of Grand Rapids’ 2017 and 2013 Calder Cup championship teams, he played his 500th regular season game with the Griffins on March 11, 2020 against Iowa, joining Travis Richards (655) as the only players to hit that milestone out of the 526 who suited up for Grand Rapids over its first 24 seasons.

Brian Lashoff was 18 years old when he made his Grand Rapids Griffins debut back in 2009.
Lashoff, a defenseman, played on Grand Rapids’ 2013 and 2017 Calder Cup championship teams, and he competed in his 500th Griffins game this past March 11 against Iowa, which proved to be the season finale due to the coronavirus outbreak. Only Travis Richards has played in more games (526) for the Griffins.
The Griffins will be leaning on Lashoff’s experience and leadership in what is expected to be one of the AHL’s most challenging seasons. The Griffins announced Thursday that Lashoff has been named the team’s 2021 team captain.

The Detroit Red Wings had high hopes for Evgeny Svechnikov after drafting him 19th overall in 2015.
But after several seasons marked by injuries and inconsistency and only 20 NHL games under his belt, the Red Wings are prepared to take the chance of losing the 6-3, 208-pound winger for nothing.
Svechnikov was waived on Monday. If he clears at noon Tuesday, he can be assigned to the taxi squad (four-to-six players) or the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, who aren’t scheduled to start the season until early February.
Red Wings Waive Nine; Final Roster Tomorrow
The Detroit Red Wings waived nine players on Monday as they get closer to the final 23-man opening night roster for Thursday s opener against the Carolina Hurricanes at Little Caesars Arena.
They are forwards Evgeny Svechnikov (pictured), Dominic Turgeon, Riley Barber, and Kyle Criscuolo. Defensemen Joe Hicketts, Brian Lashoff, and Dylan McIlrath. And finally, goaltenders Calvin Pickard and Kevin Boyle.
If all of them clear waivers, they can either be assigned to the team s taxi squad (between 4-6 players because of COVID-19) or be sent to the AHL s Grand Rapids Griffins, the team s top farm affiliate.
