A KWEKWE man who died from Covid-19 after contact with a niece who had just returned from India where thousands have succumbed to a deadly variant has brought panic among health authorities in the city.
Robson Kadenhe (76) of Chicago Plots along Gokwe Road who was a known hypertension patient on treatment died on Wednesday after testing positive to Covid-19.
However, health authorities are yet to determine if he had contracted the deadly Indian cov2 variant that has caused chaos in the Asian country where thousands are dying daily.
Kadenhe’s wife, Mary also tested positive, but their niece Nataly Kadenhe (21) tested negative to the disease.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa says although the Covid-19 pandemic has ravaged the country and globally community, in Zimbabwe it has turned to be a “blessing in disguise”.
He said the pandemic had given his government an opportunity to upgrade abandoned public health facilities across the country.
Government health institutions in Zimbabwe have in recent years deteriorated to alarming levels due to lack of maintenance and equipping them with machinery and drugs.
This saw senior state government and Zanu PF officials and their families including ministers travelling out of the country shunning the neglected and ill-equipped facilities.
Zim targets herd immunity by year end

Zimbabwe aims to achieve the 10 million herd immunity by year-end, with over 300 000 people so far receiving their first Covid-19 vaccination doses, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has said.
VP Chiwenga, who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care, said this yesterday at the Midlands provincial Covid-19 vaccination rollout launch at Kwekwe General Hospital.
“I am happy with our vaccination programmes throughout the country which have seen 300 000 people having received their first doses so far.
“Our target is to reach what we call herd immunity by year end as we seek to get back to normal life after the devastating effects of the Covid-19,” he said.

For years, the government has also been unwilling to improve the welfare of public healthcare workers resulting in thousands of them seeking greener pastures in other countries leaving hospitals without critical staff.
