An athletics official at the Asian Games in China suffered a horrific leg fracture and bleeding after being hit by a stray hammer thrown by a competitor. Huang Qinhua, the official, was struck by a misplaced 16-pound hammer thrown by Kuwaiti athlete Ali Zankawi during the men's hammer final. Zankawi rushed to help Qinhua, applying a tourniquet to control the bleeding. Qinhua was taken to the hospital and treated for a broken bone. Despite the incident, Qinhua seemed in good spirits and was seen kissing Zankawi in a hospital bed. Social media users are calling for improved security protocols to ensure the safety of referees.
