KUWAIT, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Kuwait on Sunday reduced the number of daily overseas airline passenger arrivals by 80% to 1,000 to manage the spread of a new coronavirus variant, a source told Reuters.
Kuwaiti newspapers earlier reported the decision, citing unnamed sources. Kuwait s civil aviation authority could not be immediately reached for comment.
The Gulf state on Tuesday reported its first cases of a more contagious coronavirus variant, which the health ministry said had been detected in two women returning from Britain.
State-owned Kuwait Airways on Friday said it would operate fewer services between Jan. 24 and Feb. 6 following instructions from health authorities and the state aviation regulation.

Kuwaitis registered on ‘In safety’ platform reach 5,330 until now
KUWAIT CITY, Dec 22: The General Manager of National Aviation Services (NAS) Mansour Al-Khuzayem said in a special statement that the number of citizens who registered on the “In safety” platform has reached 5,330 until now, reports Al-Anba daily.
He explained that the number of reservations reached 2,290 for India and the Philippines, and the number of citizens who received tickets that had been previously booked reached 2,092. The number of tourism and travel offices as well as approved branches registered in the “In-safety” platform has reached 320 so far.
Al-Khuzayem affirmed that the platform works perfectly and is highly efficient, stressing that coordination is underway between the Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGCA) in Kuwait and some destinations such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to restart the recruitment process after obtaining the initial approvals from those authorities.
