President Akufo-Addo has described the late former President Jerry John Rawlings as his “good friend and a repository of sound advice.”
According to Mr Akufo-Addo, in moments of difficulty in his presidency, he could count on Mr Rawlings’ considerable “wealth of experience and knowledge,” and “on those occasions, he came through for me.”
Nana Akufo-Addo said these in a tribute to Mr Rawlings during his final funeral rites at the Black Square in Accra on Wednesday, 27 January 2021.
The President admitted that although Mr Rawlings and himself were not the best of friends at a point, with time, things changed and they came to see value in each other.
He burst onto the scene like a meteor, but a meteor that did not burst into flames and disintegrate like all meteors do. On the contrary, it remained potent until the very end of its life, leaving strong footprints in the sands of time.

Rawlings family accepts Akufo-Addo’s proposal to rename UDS-Tamale after him LISTEN

President Akufo-Addo has announced that the University of Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, will be renamed after late former President, Jerry John Rawlings.
Although Mr. Rawlings rejected the honour while he was alive, President Akufo-Addo said his family has endorsed the decision.
President Akufo-Addo announced this at Rawlings’ pre-burial service held at the Black Star Square in Accra on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
“Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him, in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies, Tamale, (UDS), which he, personally, helped establish, named after him. President Akufo-Addo has likened the late former President Jerry John Rawlings to a meteor that never burst and disintegrates as all meteors do.
He said the former president remained “potent until the very end of its life, leaving strong footprints in the sands of time”.
Describing him as an energetic, charismatic and a fearless leader, Akufo Addo says Rawlings showed his true leadership when he stood up before the military trial and took full responsibility for the failed coup attempt whiles asking that his colleagues be let off the hook.
