How dearly I have missed the directorial work of Nalan Kumarasamy. Is there another filmmaker who’s so at ease generating laugh-out-loud humour from complex, sensitive situations, and who is able to achieve this without ever trivialising the central issues of the film? The man is a rare talent.

During the Lockdown period, famous directors made a few shorts films and integrated them into a single movie released on OTT platforms. Today s release Kutty Story was supposed to release on OTT, but since theatres in Tamil Nadu are functioning with Full occupancy, the producer team approached Theatres.
Cinema audiences always like to watch movies at big-screen theatres, but lockdown closed all those theatres for more than seven months and made everyone watch at OTT platforms.
Few movie lovers watched movies on OTT, but most of them downloaded movies on piracy websites on the same day of release with high-quality prints. From Feb 2021, the central government announced to remove covid restrictions on theatres with Full occupancy, and the public is likely to watch on big screens.

It’s a tricky thing, a poisoned chalice if you will, isn’t it this joining hands with a star? It must be pretty hard to tell a genuinely authentic story when you are tasked with injecting star essence into the veins of fans once every few minutes and make story progress only while the fleeting high lasts.
The first warning that this is likely to happen throughout Master is how long the film teases you with the introduction of JD, as his footwear remains in focus, encouraging you to pay obeisance.
To be fair to director Lokesh Kanagaraj though, he does seem to have put in a shift to try and offer creative doses of Vijay intoxication in this film.

This Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial pits Thalapathy Vijay against Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi and offers a largely engaging experience despite its 3 hours runtime. The core story is centered around a juvenile correction home, and how professor John Durairaj (JD) stops the evil Bhavani from further exploiting young kids, corrupting their naive minds and turning them into criminals.
Thalapathy is terrific as expected. His fit physique (unleashing an extended bare body sequence in the climax), an immense sense of style and swag, agility in action scenes, and emotional acting skills will be a feast to not just ardent fans of the star but even class audiences. The usual Vijayisms (social messages, punch dialogs, extravagant mannerisms) are kept under check though they are still effective inclusions.
