The University of Kentucky's East Palestine Health Tracking Study received a two-year grant from the NIEHS to study the aftermath of the February 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
Erin Haynes, D.P.H., chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health at the UK College of Public Health, is one of this year's University Research Professors. Haynes has been at UK since 2018, and is now the Kurt W. Deuschle Professor of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health.
On Feb. 3, a train carrying hazardous materials derailed near East Palestine, raising concerns about both short- and long-term impacts on the health of the area’s residents. This survey is the first step in the team’s planning of a long-term research study to assess the potential lingering health effects from the toxic chemicals released and formed from the derailment and the subsequent controlled burn of chemicals.
