Masilonyana council removes mayor and MM

───   LUCKY NKUYANE 10:43 Sun, 16 May 2021 The mayor and the municipal manager (MM) of the Masilonyana municipality, which includes Theunissen in the Free State, have both been removed from their posts. According to the DA Chief whip in the council, Tshidiso Molahloe, both the mayor, Kunatu Koalane, and MM, Sipho Mtakati, were removed at a special council sitting on Friday.  He says they were removed following instructions from the provincial department of Cooperative Governance (Cogta).  Molahloe says they were informed that the two were not fit for these two positions.  Both the municipality and Cogta are yet to comment on OFM News questions.

Freedom Day: Ramaphosa speaks, South Africa celebrat

Today marks 27 years since South Africa’s first democratic elections. Official celebrations to mark the occasion were held in Botshabelo, Free State under the theme “The year of Charlotte Maxeke: The meaning of freedom under Covid-19”.  Limited to 250 people, the event was attended by members of the Botshabelo community as well as politicians, a few ministers and ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule. President Cyril Ramaphosa, who addressed the nation as part of the day’s proceedings, spoke out against corruption and encouraged South Africans to exercise their freedoms and vote in the upcoming local government elections.  “I call on you to demonstrate, with your vote, your intolerance for corruption, theft and mismanagement of the funds that are meant for the benefit of you, the citizen,” he said.

Free State protests: Municipal mayor s parents home torched, over 40 people arrested

Jaco Marais More than 40 people have been arrested for public violence in three towns in the Free State. The protests were reportedly sparked by changing the location of Freedom Day celebrations. The parental home of Masilonyana municipality mayor Kunatu Koalane was torched during the protests. Eleven people have been arrested for petrol bombing a police vehicle and setting alight a house in Theunissen, in the Free State. Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said protesters allegedly set the house of Masilonyana municipality mayor Kunatu Koalane s parents on fire on Wednesday night. They also allegedly petrol bombed a police nyala. [Police] members managed to extinguish the fire before any damage
