The Kuki Chiefs’ Association (KCA) of Khengjoi subdivision in Chandel district has written to the Director General of the Assam Rifles requesting him not to deploy its unit under the command of a Meitei officer at Sehlon in Manipur’s Chandel district “in the interest of peace and security.”
Kuki bodies in Manipur on Sunday stated that no resolution adopted by the assembly will be binding in Kuki areas, while asking 10 MLAs from the community to refrain from attending assembly session on August 29, 2023.
Most of the Kuki MLAs irrespective of their party affiliations are unlikely to attend the Manipur assembly session slated to be called from August 21 in view of the continued ethnic violence, according to leaders from the community.
Without Kuki representation, analysts said it is unlikely that any meaningful discussion on the ethnic rioting could be made which has engulfed Manipur for the last three months claiming more than 160 lives.
