A three-member committee constituted by the Supreme Court to look into the violence in Manipur had recently advised the Manipur government to publish a list of those who have died, and if no one comes to claim the bodies, to dispose of them in a “respectable manner.” The Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body of the Kuki tribes and the Kuki Students Organization-General Headquarters stated that it is pertinent to recognize that the state of Manipur has been clearly separated on ethnic lines.
Kuki bodies in Manipur on Sunday stated that no resolution adopted by the assembly will be binding in Kuki areas, while asking 10 MLAs from the community to refrain from attending assembly session on August 29, 2023.
Tension had been brewing since Thursday morning in the two districts and adjoining areas as huge mobs came out on the streets to block the movement of forces. The mobs wanted to go to Tuibuong, the burial site in Churachandpur. When the security forces blocked this, the mob retaliated by pelting stones on them. Security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob. Crowds, which gathered in Imphal, were also dispersed.
