Her responsibilities will include equalities policy, the TUC’s Anti-Racism Task Force and TUC strategy.
Ms Batool, 42, has been a union rep in the National Union of Teachers (now National Education Union) and a national negotiating official at the NASUWT teaching union, where she lobbied government, Ofsted and employers to improve pay and conditions for school staff.
She also introduced development programmes for women, black, LGBT and disabled trade unionists.
Ms Batool said: “In a fair society, all people should have equal life chances.
“We must make sure that everyone can achieve their full potential – no matter their gender, race, sexuality, disability, age or background.
