Walkout from KU syndicate meeting over professor’s appointment Karachi April 11, 2021 Faculty members walked out of the University of Karachi’s (KU) syndicate meeting on Saturday over a controversy on the appointment of a professor. The syndicate meeting, which was chaired by KU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Khalid Iraqi, also approved the termination of services of four teachers of the varsity, including Hafsa Nasar, Saba Masood, Asma Khan and Tasneem Akhter as they had been absent from the service for long. It was also decided that the varsity would make recovery from them within six months. Heated arguments, however, were exchanged between syndicate members over the selection of Dr Saleha Rehman who had applied for the post of professor in the zoology department. Former KU faculty member loses battle to Covid-19

Karachi March 16, 2021 Dr Shakeel-ur-Rehman Farooqui, associate professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Karachi, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 61. His colleagues said he had been admitted in a private hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 a few weeks ago, but due to other complications and the severity of his illness, he could not survive. His funeral prayers were offered after the evening prayers at Jamia Masjid Ibrahim, which is located on campus, following which he was buried at the university’s cemetery. The funeral was attended by KU acting vice chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) President Prof Dr Shah Ali Al-Qadr, Jamaat-e-Islami senior leader Dr Meraj Al-Huda Siddiqui, Arts Council President Ahmad Shah, heads of the university’s faculties, and a large number of students and administrative staff members.

University of Karachi (KU) acting vice chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi expressed these views while addressing a programme held to pay tribute to Benazir on her 13th death anniversary. The event was held at KU’s Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Chair (SMBBC), which had been established to share her vision through research on her life and political struggle. Dr Iraqi said that living nations never forget national leaders like them. “Some personalities in our country have made history, and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was certainly one of them.”
