Grantsville wins big in return from long layoff

Buffs blow out Hurricane; Reds stop Stallions ♦ It had been nearly three weeks since the Grantsville boys basketball team had played a game, with a COVID-19 outbreak causing the cancellation of four games ahead of the regularly scheduled Christmas break.  Tooele’s layoff wasn’t quite as bad, with the Buffaloes having not played a game with their full varsity roster intact in 10 days thanks to a COVID outbreak that sent 10 of their players into quarantine just before the holiday. Still, both the Cowboys and Buffs could have come in to Monday’s opening games of the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic in Cedar City with a bit of rust to shake off.

Pirates pull away from Stallions

Stansbury starts slow in 17-point loss ♦ Wednesday’s non-region game against Cyprus couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start for the Stansbury boys basketball team. The Stallions went more than seven minutes without a field goal, a stretch during which the Pirates rattled off 19 unanswered points. When the dust settled, the Stallions were down 21-5, and had nearly twice as many turnovers as they did points. Even the national anthem went wrong during pregame when the recording cut out, though the smattering of fans from both schools in the bleachers finished the song a capella. And while Stansbury mounted a furious comeback, the Stallions ultimately ran out of gas in the end. Class 6A Cyprus used a 14-3 fourth-quarter run to pull away for a 70-53 win at Stansbury High School  the Pirates’ fourth in five games to open the 2020-21 season.

Thirteen gridiron stars named All-State

Cowboys place three on Class 3A First Team ♦ After a season in which two Tooele County teams made deep postseason runs, and a third showed plenty of promise, it comes as no surprise that the annual All-State teams are filled with some of the county’s top talent. Grantsville leads the way with seven All-State selections, including three First Teamers, after the Cowboys advanced to the Class 3A state semifinals for the second consecutive season. Grantsville also had two Second Teamers and two Honorable Mention recipients. Stansbury had four players named to the Second Team in Class 4A, while Stansbury and Tooele each had one player earn Honorable Mention.
