Minister of the Interior Kristian Jaani has appointed Joosep Kaasik as the Prefect of the Northern Prefecture of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA), with a salary of â¬4,600 per month.
Kaasik s appointment came at the proposal of PPA chief Elmar Vaher last month, with the corresponding directive issued on March 15. Kaasik has a five-year contract, dated retroactively from March 1, 2021.
Kaasiks s monthly wage stands at â¬2,265. In addition, Jaani assigned him a rank-ranged â¬135 additionally, a regional fee of â¬200 per month and a compensatory fee of â¬2,000 per month, coming to a total of â¬4,600 per month.
Kaasik joined the police force in 1991, working there till 2017 when he joined Tallinn University of Technology as its Administrative Director, also obtaining a master s degree during that time.
The Green Party has filed a crime report with the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA), claiming that significant quantities of oil have been transferred between one vessel and another, within a specially designated conservation area.
Greens leader Zuleyxa Izmailova said: We have asked the PPA to investigate how has a situation become possible where the government has been engaging in enabling the threat of an environmental catastrophe.
The alleged ship-to-ship oil transfers had taken place in the Pakri special conservation area, close to the port city of Paldiski, on the northwest coast.
The Greens area also asking about a regulation adopted last year which apply to the Narva River and Peipsi Järv, regulating water-borne transfers of environmentally hazardous agents, but which, they say, do not take into account environmentally sensitive areas or allow for fees to be levied on such activity in those areas.
Former Prime Minister Mart Laar (Isamaa) has said Kaja Kallas decision to give the portfolios of minister of the interior and minister of foreign affairs to the Center Party could put internal and external security in danger. Leaving apart some individuals, does anybody imagine how vigorously the institutions under the ministries belonging to the Center Party - or the Reform Party - will start investigating the corruption scandal? Or how credible and trustworthy the Center Party s minister of foreign affairs will be, when [the party] has signed a contract with a Russian party, [or] protesting against arresting Alexei Navalny? Laar said in an interview to daily newspaper Postimees.
On Tuesday morning, the new Reform-Center coalition led by Prime Minister Kaja Kallas took the oath of office in the Riigkogu.
All ministers were in attendance except for Minister Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas (Center) who signed the oath digitally.
The government s first sitting will take place at 2 p.m.
On Tuesday afternoon, former Prime Minister Jüri Ratas handed the prime minister s office over to Kallas.
