3 Highlights From House Hearing on Disinformation in News Media

It’s a sticky wicket because of our Constitution, but we need to examine and be frank with each other about what is taking place, says Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., pictured May 14, 2020, during a House committee hearing. WATCH: House Hearing on Media Bias & Extremism — Live Stream

By Colby HallFeb 24th, 2021, 9:30 am The House Sub-Committee on Energy and Commerce is holding what will likely be a contentious hearing called “Fanning the Flames: Disinformation and Extremism in the Media.” The hearing comes at a time when the nation is bitterly divided, largely by media consumption habits, and allegations of disinformation are flying on almost a daily basis. Chaired by Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), the Democratic-controlled sub-committee is certain to take a critical look at conservative media outlets, such as OAN, Newsmax, and Fox News, in light of the amplified “stolen election” conspiracy theory that seemed to inspire the deadly insurrection led by Trump supporters on Jan. 6.

Letters from Congress Appear to Threaten Cable News

and sure to be very controversial. Reps. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) and Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.) on Monday wrote letters to twelve of the largest cable, satellite and technology companies which, per a press release from the two of them, is “urging them to combat the spread of misinformation and requesting more information about their actions to address misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy theories, and lies spread through channels they host.” The letters went out to the heads of AT&T, Verizon, Roku, Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Charter, Dish, Cox, Altice, Alphabet (Google), and Hulu. The timing of the letter is timed ahead of the House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee’s scheduled hearing on Wednesday, on the subject of “Fanning the Flames: Disinformation and Extremism in the Media.” Eshoo and McNerney are both members of that committee.
