Pamplin Media Group - 8 years later, no end in sight for airport expansion dispute

8 years later, no end in sight for airport expansion dispute December 29 2020 The city of Wilsonville will appeal the Land Use Board of Appeals decision to dismiss a case attempting to block the expansion. A recent Land Use Board of Appeals ruling to dismiss an appeal of an Oregon Aviation Board decision that essentially validated the Aurora Airport Master Plan did not deter Wilsonville City Council from pursuing further legal action. The City Council voted 4-1 to appeal LUBA s decision to the Oregon Court of Appeals during a meeting Monday, Dec. 21. Wilsonville City Councilor Ben West provided the sole no vote. 1000 Friends of Oregon, the city of Aurora and Aurora planner Joseph Schaefer may also appeal the LUBA decisions. The court of appeals is the second-highest judicial body in Oregon behind the Oregon State Supreme Court.

Pamplin Media Group - Charbonneau: Wilsonville s most influential voting bloc

Eight years later, Eric Postma still can t quite figure out what happened. Running against current mayor-elect Julie Fitzgerald and former Wilsonville City Councilor Susie Stevens in a race for two council spots, Postma won two of three Wilsonville precincts but lost the Charbonneau precinct by such a margin that he wound up finishing third. This result reflects a perplexing quagmire for more outwardly conservative candidates (Wilsonville elections are nonpartisan races but several recent candidates have been outspoken in their right-wing leanings) running for City Council. Despite the fact that Charbonneau residents vote more conservatively than the rest of Wilsonville in most races (Donald Trump lost narrowly in Charbonneau in 2016 and 2020, and convincingly in the rest of the city), those candidates have been losing the planned community south of the Willamette River by massive margins. And this has helped the current council majority maintain its foothold on city politics.
