In response to the pandemic, the city has temporarily allowed urban camping in some areas if camps followed health guidelines and requirements.
The ordinance passed highlights 13th and Chambers and Washington Jefferson Park as priorities. The city intends to crack down on camping in these spaces while offering occupants a spot at a shelter site.
City officials expressed support Monday night for a plan to create more safe and lawful places for people who are experiencing homelessness and are unsheltered to sleep.
The Eugene City Council unanimously agreed to hold a public hearing April 26 on an ordinance that would direct staff to identify more safe parking and safe tent sites.
Based on a presentation from staff, the city hopes to add:
Two to four locations where up to 60 vehicles can park.
Four to eight locations that could hold up to 40 tents.
It would be legal to sleep at those sites until at least May 1, 2023. Services would be available at all locations.
