"My Country Needs Help": UCalgary student speaks out about the Conflict in Myanmar

“My Country Needs Help”: UCalgary student speaks out about the Conflict in Myanmar Since Feb. 1, 2021, the country of Myanmar has been plagued by violence and chaos after its military staged a coup d’état and removed the democratically elected National League for Democracy Party from power. This included the arrest of the party leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner and former State Counsellor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi. International reactions have been mixed in reaction to Aung San Suu Kyi’s arrest in particular, due to her lack of response during the Rohingya Genocide. The minority Muslim population in Myanmar had to flee persecution from strong and violent military forces. Aung San Suu Kyi has been accused of enabling the genocide by refusing to condemn the military and later defending them before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Dr. Jennifer Jackson on injectable opioid agonist treatment in Alberta

Dr. Jennifer Jackson on injectable opioid agonist treatment in Alberta In a recent news release, the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary revealed that a two-year injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT) program was successful in suppressing life-threatening opioid withdrawal symptoms. The program involves a regimen of injections of hydromorphone “2-3 times a day with a liquid medication being taken as well at the end of the day,” according to Dr. Jennifer Jackson, an assistant professor in the UCalgary Faculty of Nursing in an interview with the Gauntlet.  Jackson compared this treatment to the likes of kidney dialysis, where patients receive medication indefinitely, based on their varied responses. The professor also emphasized that, “people do not get high from these injections. They avoid the physical symptoms of withdrawal which can actually kill them.” Sobriety is not a necessary end goal of the iOAT program, which aims to simply improve the wellbeing

Announcements forthcoming for spring, summer and fall course delivery methods

With the 2021 Winter Semester ‘Zoom-ing’ by (forgive the pun), University of Calgary students have been eager for updates on the format of the fast- approaching Spring, Summer and Fall 2021 terms.  In a January 2021 update on the UCalgary emergency management webpage, an announcement was made that the format of the spring/summer semesters would be “delivered with a blend of online and face-to-face courses, with most courses online.” Specific course details won’t be available until Feb. 23, when students can check their student centre to verify their course delivery method. The delivery method for Fall 2021 has not yet been decided by the university according to the webpage, but students will apparently receive an announcement sometime in April.
