Residents in Texas and Oklahoma are recovering Friday after major hailstorms battered portions of the states late Wednesday, destroying homes and businesses and automobiles.
AccuWeather forecasters estimate the damage could be more than $3 billion because the devastating storms unleashed large amounts of hail in metro areas, such as Norman, Oklahoma, and San Antonio, and Fort Worth, Texas.
AccuWeather Senior Vice President and Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter estimates total damage and economic loss caused by Wednesday night s hailstorms are predicted to be about $3.5 billion. To put the economic toll of these storms into context, Porter continued, AccuWeather s estimate for Hurricane Isaias, a Category 1 storm that struck the Caribbean and moved up the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. in July and August of 2020, was $3 billion to $5 billion. It is yet another in a series of $1 billion-plus weather disasters.

Hail, some as big as baseballs, pummeled parts of Texas and Oklahoma Wednesday night, denting cars, shattering glass and, in at least one case, smashing through a home s roof.
The hail came from a line of severe storms that also triggered tornado warnings and caused flooding in Texas, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
A hailstorm destroyed windows in Beth Van Horn s home in Norman, Oklahoma. Van Horn told KOCO she first thought a tornado was hitting because the storm was roaring so loudly.

Three separate hailstorms swept across parts of Texas and Oklahoma Wednesday evening, smashing vehicle windshields and windows of homes – even punching through roofs in what is likely to be a billion-dollar disaster. Hail damage in Norman, Fort Worth and San Antonio combined are likely to exceed $1 billion, said Bryan Wood, an Ohio-based meteorologist working in the insurance industry, in a tweet Thursday morning.
The first of these began as a supercell thunderstorm crossed the border from northern Mexico late Wednesday afternoon, dumping up to 3-inch diameter hail near Laughlin Air Force Base southeast of Del Rio, Texas.
