Former Dodger Jerry Sands delivered the big blow for the Hanshin Tigers as they beat the Yokohama DeNA BayStars 7-5 in a Central League slugfest on Sunday.
Sands broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning with a two-out, two-run home run over Koshien Stadium’s center-field fence. Sands walked, reached on an error, and scored twice in four plate appearances as the league-leading Tigers overcame a tough fight from the last-place BayStars.

The tally for this week, however, will be zero, as Japanese baseball moves partially behind closed doors due to the start of Japan’s third state of emergency covering Tokyo, Hyogo, Kyoto and Osaka prefectures on Sunday Starting Tuesday, games hosted at Tokyo Dome, Jingu Stadium, Koshien Stadium and Osaka Dome will be played in front of empty seats until the measure ends, which is scheduled to happen May 11. Five games were postponed in hopes they can be played in front of fans at later dates.

The 32-year-old Tanaka (1-1) struck out four and hit a batter, while allowing three hits at Sendai s Rakuten Seimei Park Miyagi. His last time on the mound at the Eagles home park had been to close out the 2013 Japan Series with a Game 7 save.
