The market for hydrogen-powered vehicles is gaining momentum amid global interest in the fuel as a means of meeting carbon targets.
Major economies have announced plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and have unveiled national roadmaps for building a hydrogen economy. These efforts are placing an increased focus on eco-friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
The market for FCEVs remains a niche segment of the global car market but is seeing growth. According to energy market tracker SNE Research, 2,594 hydrogen-powered vehicles were sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2020, up 27.3 percent from the same quarter of 2019.

South Korea’s first fuel cell refuse truck launched
South Korea’s first hydrogen-powered garbage truck entered service a few days ago in Changwon. The 5-ton truck with fuel cell will initially be tested for one year as part of a project of the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy with Hyundai Motor and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute.
The hydrogen truck is expected to have a range of 350 kilometres. Six cylindrical pressure tanks are installed behind the driver’s cab and are said to be able to store up to 25 kilograms of hydrogen. Externally, the vehicle resembles a garbage truck with an internal combustion engine commonly used in South Korea. South Korean media do not provide any details on further performance data.
Changwon City to Introduce World’s First Hydrogen-powered Garbage Truck

CHANGWON, Dec. 29 (Korea Bizwire) – The world’s first hydrogen-powered garbage truck will come into operation in Changwon, 400 kilometers southeast of Seoul, on New Year’s Day.
The Changwon city government held a special ceremony on Monday accepting a 5-ton hydrogen-powered garbage truck in front of city hall.
Last May, Changwon signed an agreement with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, and Hyundai Motor to operate the world’s first 5-ton hydrogen garbage truck.
The truck’s exterior design is identical to other garbage trucks, except for the fact that it runs on electricity, instead of gasoline, generated by hydrogen combined with oxygen.

1st Gear: Shit Is Getting Real With New Strain Of Coronavirus
France was quick to close its somewhat wet border with the UK and halt travel amid a new strain of coronavirus in Britain. This is bad for us, as humans, and it’s bad for cars, as an industry. Toyota has closed shop in both the UK and France a few days early, before Christmas and New Year’s, because of what Bloomberg titles “virus border chaos.” Via B’berg:
Toyota will halt production in the U.K. and France starting Tuesday due to transport delays caused by the spread of a mutant strain of coronavirus that has led several countries to close their borders with Britain.
