Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen said Friday that he plans to “negotiate with China” so that his government can vaccinate children against COVID-19 and reopen schools, but opposition chief Sam Rainsy called the country’s coronavirus mitigation efforts a failure amid a rising death toll.
Hun Sen said the government will need four million doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine to bolster existing supplies and inoculate around 12 million children aged 12 to 17 years old in the capital Phnom Penh and the provinces of Kandal and Sihanoukville as quickly as possible so that life can return to normal in Cambodia.
Residents of boats, floating houses and huts along with owners of fish farms on the rivers in Phnom Penh have dismantled and relocate following the orders from the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration. As of June 13, about two-thirds of them have voluntarily dismantled and relocated.
On June 7, an inter-ministerial committee convened a meeting to discuss ways to quickly bring about a solution to a land dispute that erupted into violence on June 3 at the Chamkar Barang area in Tuol Prich commune of Kandal province’s Ang Snuol district.
Minister of Interior Sar Kheng has instructed authorities in charge of correctional facilities throughout the country to take action to prevent further transmission of Covid-19 to prison guards and detainees, and to increase security and safety there.
Kandal’s provincial governor has claimed that soldiers did not intend to hit protesting villagers a day after security forces opened fire at land protesters and hit and injured one person.
