Case registered in Maharashtra against former AMU student Sharjeel Usmani for delivering controversial speech ANI | Updated: Feb 03, 2021 23:11 IST
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 3 (ANI): A case has been registered against Sharjeel Usmani, a former student of Aligarh Muslim University, in Maharashtra for allegedly delivering a controversial speech at the Elgaar Parishad event in Pune on January 30, said state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday. A case has been registered against Sharjeel Usmani. He is not in Maharashtra and a team of Maharashtra Police has been constituted to catch him, said Deshmukh.
Following a complaint by the Pune regional secretary of Bharatiya Yuva Janta Morcha Pradip Gawade, an FIR was filed against Sharjeel Usmani under Section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code, at the Swargate Police Station in Pune, for his speech at Elgar Parishad. This years event was organised by retired Justice BG Kolse Patil.

The Pune City Police on Tuesday filed an FIR against former Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) student Sharjeel Usmani in connection with a speech he delivered at an Elgar Parishad event. The Elgar Parishad conclave took place in the city on January 30 this year.
Pune police commissioner Amitabh Gupta siad that a case under section 153 (A) of the IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on the ground religion, etc) was registered against him.Â
Pradip Gavade, a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, BJP s youth wing, had filed a complaintwith Swargate police station against Usmani. Gawade accused Sharjeel of hurting religious sentiments and using objectionable words against a particular community. Further investigation is underway, Gupta added.

He said police have conducted a probe into the video clippings of the conclave, held on 30 January, and a case has been registered against Usmani, an Uttar Pradesh resident, for his offensive remarks .
Devendra Fadnavis alleged Usmani’s speech was anti-Hindutva and spread communal hatred.
MUMBAI: The BJP has demanded strong action against Sharjeel Usmani, a speaker at the recently held Elgar Parishad in Pune.
In a press release, Opposition leader in the state assembly Devendra Fadnavis alleged Usmani’s speech was anti-Hindutva and spread communal hatred.
“It is very surprising that a person comes to Maharashtra, makes statements that hurt religious sentiments and returns to his home state without the government initiating any legal action against him,” he said.
The Elgar Parishad organised by the Bhima Koregaon Shaurya Din Prerna Abhiyan was held in Pune on January 30. Amongst those who addressed the gathering was author Arundhati Roy, former bureaucrat Kannan Gopinath, former Bombay high court judge BG Kolse Patil.
