Using Wind Energy for Hydrogen Production : An Innovative Concept

As a way to resolve wind curtailment, the integration of hydrogen fuel at a wind farm allows flexibility to shift production to best match the resource availability with its particular operational needs and market factors.

Evaluating the Efficiency of Hydropower as an Alternative Energy Source and its Effects on the Ecosystem

Evaluating the Efficiency of Hydropower as an Alternative Energy Source and its Effects on the Ecosystem Dr. Raj Shah, Ms. Sharika Hoque, Mr. Stanley Zhang | Koehler Instrument Company Introduction  Humans have been utilizing the abundance of water for thousands of years. For example, the ancient Greeks used water mills as a form of hydroelectric power to grind wheat into flour and perform other tasks. Today, hydroelectricity accounts for 73% of global renewable energy generation through three main hydropower facilities: impoundment dams, run-of-the-river dams, and pumped storage facilities. The most common type of hydroelectric power plant is an impoundment facility. This type of plant uses a dam to store river water and then releases the water into a turbine which causes it to spin. Unfortunately, dams can potentially disrupt the river ecosystems on which they are built on, but modifications can be made to limit these harmful effects.

Artificial Photosynthesis as a Renewable Energy Source

Artificial Photosynthesis as a Renewable Energy Source Dr. Raj Shah, Ms. Eliana Matsil, Ms. Gabrielle Massoud | Koehler Instrument Company The urgency of realizing a clean substitute to our fossil fuel energy supply is increasing exponentially. The study of artificial photosynthesis as a renewable energy source has been carried out for decades. This approach uses biomimetic techniques to replicate the process of natural photosynthesis, which uses abundant resources of sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and energy-rich carbohydrates. By replicating this operation, researchers are able to design systems which utilize these natural resources to convert solar energy into chemical energy and store it in the bonds of a fuel. Fuels that are able to be produced by artificial photosynthesis include hydrocarbons such as formic acid (HCOOH), methanol (CH3OH), carbon monoxide (CO), and methane (CH4), or pure hydrogen fuel. The chemical processes involved in artificial phot

Advancements in Desalination Using Solar Energy

Introduction Freshwater is essential for people around the world. However, with the scarcity of freshwater that we are currently encountering, desalination processes need to be improved to efficiently generate clean and safe water. A major issue with desalination systems is that they are very energy-intensive and release harmful emissions into the environment when using fossil fuels. Switching to using renewable sources such as solar energy for desalination systems gives a more environmentally friendly approach to desalination and helps to combat water scarcity. Advancements in solar energy desalination processes, including electrodialysis and reverse osmosis, will be looked at in this paper. Solar energy has a large potential as a renewable desalination energy source because of its abundance on Earth. Furthermore, advances in solar-wind hybrid desalination systems will be looked at, that demonstrate high efficiency and low carbon emissions as well.
