How innovative WASH programming is creating sustainable water systems in war-torn Afghanistan by Mohammad Khalid Azami, WASH Officer, Habiburahman Haziq, WASH Officer, & Jonathan Hunter, WASH Specialist, UNICEF Afghanistan - 04 May 2021 Kabul, Afghanistan: Amongst the myriad of challenges that children in Afghanistan face, last month’s Water Security for All index cited this troubled, insecure nation as one of the world’s 37 ‘hot-spots.’ In practical terms, this means that the country simultaneously faces high water scarcity and low water services – an unenviable combination, and one that makes it especially vulnerable to climate shocks and extreme weather events. Against this backdrop, UNICEF Afghanistan is working with the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) to address these challenges in a sustainable, cost-effective and efficient way.
